Blood Pressure: Guidance, facts and information that may save your life! Blood Pressure: Guidance, facts and information that may save your life!

High Blood Pressure or hypertension is a dangerous disease because it causes your heart to work much harder. If your heart is required to work harder for extended periods, it will become enlarged. If your heart is slightly enlarged, it can and should still work ok, but if it becomes significantly enlarged it won't. You will also find high blood pressure also causes damage to your arteries which can then cause arterial disease.

Low blood pressure is a potentially serious health condition where a person's blood pressure is much lower than usual or healthy. When the blood pressure is low, it usually causes symptoms such as dizziness lightheadedness and collapse. When the blood pressure is too low, it means there isn't enough blood flowing to the heart, brain, and other vital organs of the body.

Extended periods of either hypertension or low blood pressure are conditions for concern and you should seek competent medical advice. You can learn more about these conditions on these pages.

Causes of low blood pressure

Did you know the causes of low blood pressure should be treated before making attempts to treat the clinical conditions of hypotension? The causes of low blood pressure under conditions such as trauma may lead to further medical emergencies and should be treated immediately.

If any person has suffered from burns for instance the blood vessel’s permeability is altered. Low blood pressure is usually to be found in any case of a person suffering from severe burns. Heat stroke is found to have interference in the fluid mechanism of body which in turn tends to lower the blood pressure.

Low blood pressure is a symptom of cardiomyopathy and should be treated as soon as it is discovered. Respiratory problems such as pneumothorax can also have accompanying low blood pressure and any inflammation to organs such as the pancreas, can result in associated low blood pressure.

If any individual is prescribed anti-hypertensive drugs for a long period of time, then they may experience symptoms of hypotension due to a build up of the antihypertensive drugs in their body. Medications such as beta-blockers should be monitored carefully by a physician to ensure side effects are not experienced by their patients.

Cardiac problems are a classic cause of low blood pressure; the person may suffer from valve related defects such as tricuspid regurgitation. This can then have a detrimental effect on a person's blood pressure.

In hypovolemia, where cases of gastro intestinal problems occur such as intense diarrhea, dysentery etc, the persons may suffer from reduced blood pressure. Another cause of low blood pressure can include the over usage of diuretic medications which lower the blood pressure to dangerous levels if not prescribed in a safe manner.

Patients undergoing treatment including nitrate medication may suffer from lowered blood pressure especially if they then consume alcoholic beverages. Therefore patients prescribed nitrates should avoid drinking alcohol if at all possible. Other drug related causes of low blood pressure include taking drugs such as nitroglycerine and sorbitrate etc. Again these should be monitored carefully.

If a person is suffering from low blood pressure signs and symptoms would include, dizziness and fainting. But often there may be no signs or symptoms at all. It should also be remembered that there is a fairly fine line between a blood pressure being "healthily" low and clinically low and it may depend on the patient and whether they felt unwell or not as to what category their blood pressure fell into.

It's quite difficult sometimes to judge a "normal" blood pressure for a person because something normal for one person may well be "abnormal" for another. So it is important that if there is a suspicion someone's blood pressure may be causing them a problem it is investigated very carefully as even small changes in their blood pressure may cause them adverse medical problems.
